comments on figuration and abstraction at 12:56, 22:48 the point of technical achievement 25:57 critique of no work from Welcome to the Jungle by Kobena Mercer 27:04 black figure as rhetorical device 29:09 32:09 institution, art history's institutional legitimacy, museum's accumulation of excess capital 41:06 is also the way in which I sort of use history as a point of meditation not as an illustration 49:37 these - that this is also a way that within a single picture you can have a conversation 49:46 about abstraction and representation, simultaneously. Where the pallet itself sort of functions 49:53 as a mode of abstraction within a picture that’s about representation but is also 50:01 about the way in which systems of representation operate in a way in which you can sort of contradict or go against the implied logic of the system. an amazing artist, IMHO
Nicole Mitchell I took care of your brother's Micheal and Donald when they were little, and I was young enough to baby sit. My mother was your mother friend. I worked for your grand mother Mrs. Beard at Jack and Jill nursery school, and your daughter went to Lincoln Park High School. I'm so happy and proud of you and wish you all the best in the world. I know Micheal and Donald are grown now, and Sherry and Karen are grown. I baby sat for Carol your aunt. My name is Viola Young( at the time I was Viola French.) I wish you the best.
so pleased to discover this man, this artist. just my cup of tea totally
I could listen to him for hours. A lot of what he says resonates with me. Art history should be rewritten
Addendum to statement @ :16 - " There are no RECOGNIZED Black European 'masters'."

Stew & Heidi I fell in love with your band at The Troubadour with Ominous Seapods & Barry Smolin & Charles from Food! I still listen to that recording!! ❤
I love Doris Salcedo's work. She pushes the boundaries for important issues. The candles that she did was amazing. And it stood for something important. Lost lives.

“If you declare with your mouth “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9). Now is the time to accept Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior. Obey His commands and repent of your sins because Jesus is coming back soon. Tomorrow isn’t promised.
A modern master
I mixed these colors six years ago and I can still use them six more years later. Colors have no expiration dates

Can anyone tell me , “raise that image to the same level that it performs at the same frequency”means?
it means you gotta paint as good as those guys who are deemed as masters, and then do it your own way

How TF have I not seen this??
Beautiful, what a powerful artist 🙏🏽
Mr. Marshall is SPITTING.
Great documentary! I was fortunate to be in his class at SAIC. He was funny, sweet, and approachable. He was a perfect art school instructor, who allowed you to develop your style. At the end of the semester he shared his art work with my class. I remember thinking how much I loved his visual play, how beautiful his print execution was, and how genuinely ‘Ken’ his pieces were. Thanks!
Beautiful work and really enjoyed learning about her life and legacy!
